L

LASERDISC - Laserdisc. The original digital Home Cinema source using 12inch discs similar to CD. Only available as pre-recorded discs, a single side can hold about 45 minutes of video and stereo sound information. Screen resolution of 400 horizontal lines in a large improvement over the 240 line VHS video format, but not as good as DVD's 500 lines.  
LETTERBOX - The term used to identify a movie or television programme shown in its original widescreen format on a regular 4:3 aspect ratio television, with black borders above and below the screen.  
LINE LEVEL - Inputs and outputs on components will have sockets referred to as Line Level. This means that the signal passing through these connections will be at a standard, unamplified level and requires no amplification before reaching the amplifier at the end of the component chain.
